A Look at Landscaping Architecture with Joe Cianciotto

According to Joe Cianciotto landscaping is a significant part of the world of architecture and design. In fact, it goes beyond simply making front and back yards look good. The art of landscaping is key to residential and commercial planning, wherein aesthetics is as important as function.
Today, architecture aficionado Joe Cianciotto shares his insights on a few types of landscaping for a better understanding of what it encompasses.

The first type of landscaping is more popularly known as urban design. This is important because of all the types of landscaping, it is the one that affects most people.

Joe Cianciotto explains that urban design landscaping is done in places that are heavily populated, such as towns and cities. As such, this is the type of landscaping with the most things to consider. Some of the considerations of urban landscaping include accessibility to people with disabilities and open areas for families with children. Other things designers plan of when tackling this type of landscaping is sustainability, drainage, and space for public eventns.

The next type of landscaping according to Joe Cianciotto is recreational landscaping. It involves the construction of recreational and leisure spaces such as parks and gardens in residential areas.

Recreational landscaping is one of the most popular landscaping types for architects and landscape artists because it’s both relaxing and allows for a bit of fun.

One of the most overlooked areas not just of landscaping, but of architecture in general, is conservation landscaping. Here, landscape architects come up with designs to preserve and emphasize the beauty of areas with historical significance, for people of all ages to appreciate.

What about you? What kind of landscaping do you enjoy? Can you give examples of landscape architecture that you love to visit? Share them with Joe Cianciotto in the comments below.

Joe Cianciotto: Films that Changed Directors Mid-Production

sites.duke.edu
Joe Cianciotto Lists Successful Movies that Changed Directors
Some say that it takes a village to make a movie. The process is notoriously difficult and can be prone to various setbacks. One such challenge is losing a director, notes movie buff Joe Cianciotto. In some productions, directors are fired. Others quit for differing reasons. Even so, several films managed to overcome the loss and still ended up as a success. Some examples are listed below.

Spartacus (1960)

Shooting a high-budget ancient Roman war epic can understandably be intimidating, especially during the late 1950s when technology was not as advanced as it is now. Original director Anthony Mann took the helm of the extensive production. But three weeks in, the production was over budget and running late.

A 30-year-old Stanley Kubrick was brought in to salvage the film; the rest is history. Spartacus was critically acclaimed that it won four Academy Awards.

Jaws (1975)

Jaws is no doubt one of the most iconic films in history. It helped launch Steven Spielberg's legendary career when he was only 26 years old. But did you know he wasn't the movie's initial director? According to Joe Cianciotto, the first director was Dick Richards, but he was dropped for a hilarious reason; he kept referring to the shark as a whale.

Fortunately, Spielberg was more than capable of leading the production. A commercial and critical hit, Jaws is considered the first-ever summer blockbuster.

Superman II (1980)

thedailyjaws.com
When the first Superman movie was released in 1978, it became a huge hit and cultural phenomenon. Its sequel, Superman II, is worthy in its own right, and some pundits even consider the sequel a better film than the first. Regardless, fans, moviegoers, and film buffs like Joe Cianciotto are thankful that Superman II even made it to the theaters.

Near the end of the production, Richard Donner, the original director who also helmed the first Superman, was fired via telegram due to repeated clashes with the producers. Richard Lester was given the task of completing the movie. The film was largely re-shot, which explains the many continuity errors in the film.

Architecture traversing different industries

Unsplash.com

Architecture combines art, innovation, and structure, while art is a means of collective and relatable human expression. Architecture and art have frequently been associated as complementing disciplines. Joe Cianciotto says that excellent architecture can be considered art and can be used as a setting or an inspiration for various creative works.

Photography

Many professionals and enthusiasts are getting into architecture photography. There are many things one can explore in this type of photography. Some choose to take photos of the whole structure to showcase its unique design, while some explore the intricate details, patterns, and other interesting parts of a structure. Architects also collaborate with photographers as they feature different perspectives in their work. Through the years, there have been many photographers who have been recognized for their work as architectural photographers. Their work has been crucial in documenting the industry's growth and the trends that characterize each era.

Technology

Futuristic architecture is the best place to try new technology, says Joe Cianciotto. Cutting-edge design and innovative technologies can make a structure even more functional. Beyond the aesthetics, it can have more purpose and even help make things more efficient for its users. Emerging tech such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and other smart technologies can make an architectural structure even more groundbreaking.

Performance Art

Unsplash.com
Architecture is an excellent backdrop for performance art. Whether it’s music, dance, or acting, architecture can add to the living work of art. In this age where production is becoming easier, it is also becoming even more convenient to feature architectural works in performance pieces. There are many artists who perform their pieces in structures that they feel could help them better communicate their messages. Old structures, modern buildings, and futuristic spaces have been used as performance spaces that serve as a stage where performers can showcase their best work.

Architecture can inspire other art forms as many structures have also been influenced by the art of their time. Artists and architects can work together to create something inspiring and functional

Revisiting Shazam! and what its success means for DCEU

dcextendeduniverse.fandom.com

Shazam!, a massive superhero film of 2019, proved to be an international success with its lightheartedness and relatability. The film's incredible casting was one of the major reasons it became a hit, following many misses from the DC Extended Universe. In this article,Joe Cianciotto revisits the wins of Shazam! and its importance to the DCEU.

Following years of living in the shadow of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shazam! and Wonder Woman signaled the rebirth of DCEU. Its dark and twisted takes on beloved DC comics proved to be too much for many of the viewers—an acquired taste for some. DCEU's Shazam is played by Zachary Levi, an actor who is not a stranger to the comic world. He is, after all, the world's most successful nerd: Chuck Bartowski. His following and previous works certainly played a huge role in gathering fans worldwide to support his DC role.

Shazam! captured the audience with its quick-witted and welcoming tone, notes Joe Cianciotto. The heart behind the film speaks to audiences of different ages and walks of life. There's no denying that the film is a joy to watch. Prior to its April 2019 release, fans were hoping to see a battle between Shazam and Black Adam. However, it's been revealed that Black Adam would have its own film before sharing the screen with Shazam.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is slated to be released in November 2022. In this second movie, Billy Batson and his family are likely to show off their powers as they fight at least two villains. Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren will make their DCEU debuts in the new Shazam! film as Kalypso and Hespera, respectively. Rachel Zegler will be playing an undisclosed character in the new Shazam! movie. With a three-year break from the first one, fans like Joe Cianciotto are excited for another family experience from DCEU.

Must-watch Kevin Costner sports flicks

ftw.usatoday.com
Kevin Costner is surely a name that stands out for people who grew up watching movies in the 1980s and '90s. The American actor and producer became known for his affinity for making bold choices even during the peak of his career. Did you know that he has appeared in more than 10 movies related to sports? San Francisco-based film buff Joe Cianciotto discusses some of the best ones in this article.

Field of Dreams

Costner himself describes the movie as "our generations' 'It's a Wonderful Life.'" "Field of Dreams" is a sports fantasy drama film that tells the story of an Iowan farmer who decides to develop a baseball field in the middle of his cornfield despite the risk of financial hardship. In doing so, he invites the ghosts of several baseball legends. The film is considered by many as one of the finest films Kevin Costner ever starred in.

Bull Durham

A year before appearing in the "Field of Dreams," Costner starred in another baseball flick, "Bull Durham." The film's director, Ron Shelton, wanted the actor to be the movie's lead after seeing him successfully hit two home runs during a pseudo-audition. It turned out to be the right decision, says Joe Cianciotto, as the film has become regularly recognized as one of the greatest sports movies of all time. The role was also perfect for Costner as he showcased his strong comedic timing and impeccable charm.

Tin Cup

In 1995 and 1997, Costner featured in a box office flop ("Waterworld") and a major critical failure ("The Postman.”) In between those films, though, he starred in a rom-com sports film, "Tin Cup." The movie has him reuniting with Shelton and sees him playing a stubborn, washed-up former golf prodigy who decides to get back to the professional scene and play in the U.S. Open. Shelton hasn't been that active in recent years, but movie enthusiasts like Joe Cianciotto hope he and Costner can reunite once more for a hat trick.

Ranking The Best James Gunn Movies

variety.com
Due to his numerous recent hits, James Gunn has become one of the most well-known directors in Hollywood. Movie enthusiast Joe Cianciotto ranks the director’s best films to date in this article.

4. Slither

James Gunn's directorial debut is a throwback to alien invasion films that became popular in the 1950s. "Slither" is the story of a strange alien parasite that lands on earth and invades a small town in South Carolina. Although the flick was a box office failure, it generally received positive reviews from critics and has since become a cult classic.

3. Guardians of the Galaxy

When the production of "Guardians of the Galaxy" was announced in the early 2010s, the film was met by skeptics who doubted that an unknown group of Marvel superheroes could enjoy the success that its MCU predecessors did. However, Joe Cianciotto notes that "Guardians" became the highest-grossing superhero film of 2014.

2. The Suicide Squad

"The Suicide Squad" was not supposed to exist because of the critical and commercial failure of its prequel, released in 2016. James Gunn created a successful sequel and even managed to help save the reputation of a movie franchise that has become infamous for producing substandard films. His take on the squad of anti-heroes was well-received by fans and critics, with the film being one of the few DCEU flicks with a Rotten Tomato score of 90% or higher.

1. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

James Gunn's best work to date is "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2." Joe Cianciotto explains what makes the film so great is that the director was able to take it up a notch and defy expectations that were already sky-high due to the success of the first film. The film's ability to recapture the original's feeling of novelty and humor while dissecting the complex nature of family made it a fan favorite.

The Most Iconic New York Skyscrapers

pixabay.com
There is no doubt that the Big Apple is one of the most iconic places in the world. There is something for everyone in NYC, from its bright lights and towering structures to its vast array of cultural attractions. For architects like Joe Cianciotto, the city is a sight to behold due to its skyscrapers, which are a testament to human innovation and engineering prowess. Discussed below are some of the most iconic buildings in the city.

Empire State Building

This tower on Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street is synonymous with New York. It is one of the first skyscrapers in the city and was the tallest building in the world upon its launch in 1931. The Empire State Building has a unique Art Deco design, with its spire resembling a ship's mast.

Chrysler Building

Chrysler Building is another Art Deco masterpiece located on the East Side of Manhattan in the Turtle Bay neighborhood. As noted by Joe Cianciotto, it was the world's tallest building for 11 months before being surpassed by the Empire State Building. Its crowning glory is its spire, adorned with radiating metal sunbursts.

One World Trade Center

The highest building in the Western Hemisphere, One World Trade Center, is located at the former World Trade Center complex site. It has a height of 1776 feet, which is a symbolic reference to the year when the United States Declaration of Independence was signed.

Flatiron Building

One of the tallest buildings erected in 1902, the Flatiron Building gets its name from its triangular shape. It is situated in the borough of Manhattan on Fifth Avenue and was originally named the Fuller Building. According to Joe Cianciotto, the structure received plenty of criticism when it was built, with people making bets as to when it would fall down. It has stood the test of time and is now considered one of the most iconic skyscrapers in NYC.

Top Places to Visit to See Ancient Egyptian Architecture

If ancient Egyptian architecture piques your interest, there are several sights that you can visit to catch a glimpse of some wonderful examples of this type of architecture. Joe Cianciotto lists some of them below.

Giza pyramid complex

The Giza pyramid complex, also called the Giza necropolis, is one of the most famous legacies of ancient Egyptian architecture. It is located in Cairo, Egypt, and includes the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure. The complex also has several other smaller pyramids and tombs.

It is perhaps the most notable example of the architectural style’s heavy use of granite and limestone. Because wood is rare in the region, the most commonly used materials for construction in ancient Egypt were sun-baked mud brick and stone.

Temple of Karnak

The Temple of Karnak is located in Luxor, Egypt. It is one of the biggest temple complexes ever built. It was constructed over a period of more than two thousand years. The temple complex contains many different temples, including the Great Temple of Amun, the Temple of Khonsu, and the Temple of Ptah. It also has a number of other features, such as an avenue of sphinxes and the famous Hypostyle Hall.

Joe Cianciotto explains that the 100-hectare complex is particularly notable for its use of columns made of sandstone and brick. The complex has 139 columns in the Hypostyle Hall alone, which is the largest number of columns found in any ancient Egyptian building.

Abu Simbel Temples

The Abu Simbel temples are located in Nubia, Egypt. Pharaoh Ramses II built them in the 13th century BCE. The complex is made up of the Temple of Ramses II and the smaller Temple of Hathor.

The temples are most famous for their massive statues of Ramses II. These statues are over twenty meters tall and depict the Pharaoh seated, wearing a double crown to symbolize Upper and Lower Egypt.

This ancient monument has become a model for modern engineering, notes Joe Cianciotto. Aside from its magnificent exterior, the Abu Simbel temples have several colossal statues lined up inside.

A Look at What Makes a Movie Poster Iconic

The fact is that not all movie posters are created equal. Some posters stand the test of time and become collectors' items. Others, meanwhile, are simply forgotten. For this blog, Joe Cianciotto describes the qualities of an iconic movie poster.

Good design is essential to create an attractive poster because if the design isn't good, it could end up being a bad marketing tool for the film. Before starting the poster, several elements need to be considered, including perspective, layout, and typography, says Joe Cianciotto.

Here are some important aspects of movie posters:

1) Good Composition

Composition in art is how the various elements of an image are arranged. It is not just about how the poster looks but also its overall impact on the viewer. When designing a movie poster, this is one of the most important aspects to consider.

Composition in film marketing flyers can be divided into three sections: foreground, mid-ground, and background. Each section has its own specific role in the marketing strategy, so if you want your movie poster to be good, it needs to have a well-thought-out composition, explains Joe Cianciotto.

2) Calls-to-action

Calls-to-action are prompts intended to excite viewers and motivate them to take action. The main goal of the poster is usually to get the viewer to watch the movie in theaters, but in some cases, it can be used for other purposes. For example, a call-to-action can encourage people to buy the DVD when released, visit the movie website, or even attend an event promoting the film.

3) The Main Image

The most important part of any good design is the main image. According to Joe Cianciotto, this is the first factor to consider when creating a poster to develop an attractive design. After all, it is often the main image that comes to mind when we think of the most iconic movie posters.

An overview of vernacular architecture

Vernacular architecture is a type of building that has been constructed by local builders who use traditional materials and techniques. This style of architecture can be found all over the world, says <a href="https://www.scribd.com/user/327005869/Joe-Cianciotto"Joe Cianciotto</a>. The term "vernacular" comes from the Latin word "vernaculus," which means "native." Vernacular architecture is locally distinctive and often reflects regional variations in construction styles. It does not follow any academic tradition and can often be done without professional guidance.

Back in 1995, architect Amos Rapoport estimated that 95 percent of the world’s built environment is comprised of vernacular architecture. But with the increasing urbanization taking place across the globe, that number might have decreased a bit. Still, this architectural type remains prevalent and can be seen in countless parts of the world.

Even though it is widespread, vernacular architecture does not have a single or precise definition. According to Joe Cianciotto, what is clear is that it encompasses the peoples’ abodes and other constructions, depending on their respective environments and the materials or resources available to them. These dwellings are built to meet specific needs and highly contingent upon the economy and lifestyle of a specific culture. Other architects have stated that if a specialized discipline were to emerge that would focus on the study of vernacular architecture, it would combine some elements of architecture, anthropology, history, and geography.

Per Joe Cianciotto, vernacular architecture is not planned, consistent, or self-conscious in its design approach. But it has been around for centuries and will continue to exist because of the unique way life is pursued by different people across geographical regions.
